DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will use the power of the AdS/CFT correspondenc
e\, a UV-complete theory of quantum gravity\, to study a set of old conjec
tures about how symmetries are constrained by quantum gravity. Along the w
ay I will clarify what is meant by gauge and global symmetries in quantum
field theory\, and also give a simple criterion on conformal field theorie
