Description
Random matrices were introduced in physics by Wigner in the early 50's to understand properties of the compound nucleus. This (parameter-free) theory has been further developed since then, in particular by Mehta, Dyson and many others, and has known an astonishing success. That there are close similarities between random matrices and properties of the Riemann zeta function was realized in the early 70's, giving rise to new and partly unexpected results. Some of the highlights of this long itinerary will be discussed.
