Abstract: I will discuss the following question: is Langlands functoriality given by algebraic cycles? After listing some examples of interest, the talk will focus mostly on one case, namely that of GL_2 and its inner forms over a totally real field. In this case, we can show that functoriality is given by something close to an absolute Hodge cycle. Time permitting, I will conclude by mentioning some speculative ideas on possible improvements and generalizations of this result. (Joint work in progress with Atsushi Ichino). |
