Description
The primary motivation of this work has been to measure the ratio of neutron and proton transition matrix elements for the low-lying quadrupole (21+) and octupole (31-) excitations in the 112,116,118,120,122,124Sn isotopes by means of heavy-ion inelastic scattering. The effects of probe dependence in such measurements of transition probabilities have been investigated using a tightly-bound projectile as well as a weakly-bound projectile. The result from heavy-ion scattering is compared with that of a Coulomb excitation measurement for the lifetime of the dominant 21+ state in the most-abundant 120Sn isotope. The importance of realistic estimation of transition characteristics of the dominant low-lying states in the dynamics of nuclear collisions will also be discussed.
