Lectures on Collider Physics (5/5)

by Prof. Ashutosh Kotwal (Duke University, USA)

Thursday, September 28, 2023 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at TIFR, Mumbai ( D-406 )
Description Prof. Ashutosh Kotwal's research focuses on the physics of fundamental particles and forces at high energies. The discovery of the Higgs boson has answered the 50-year old puzzle of how fundamental particles acquire mass. However, the properties of the Higgs boson are not understood, and neither is the process by which the Higgs field condenses everywhere in space. Prof. Kotwal is pursuing these questions experimentally using two approaches - precision measurements of fundamental parameters, and direct searches for new particles and forces.

Professor Kotwal initiated and led the analyses to measure the W-boson mass precisely in the CDF II experiment at Fermilab. Over the last 27 years, he has published ve world-leading measurements of the W-boson mass. Prof. Kotwal is the Fritz London Distinguished Professor of Physics at Duke University. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, the Outstanding Junior Investigator Award from the US Department of Energy, and the Dean's Leadership Award from Duke University. He has served as the Associate Chair of the Physics Department.
