Probing RBC dynamics with an optical trap Erythrocytes exhibit various types of flow dynamics. In a particular type of flow, they can even overcome gravitational force and flow through the centre of the blood vessels. In this condition, they take up a steady orientation and and their membrane starts to revolve around them. All this is possible because of the unique design of tis cytoskeleton that is completely independant of the cytoplasm. Along with describing this phenomenon and its importance, I am going to talk about how I have developed an assay using an optical trap to visualize and study such a type of flow in great detail. Such a motion has been greatly theorized upon earlier with a derth in experiments. After, conducting some initial experiments I have found out that while the basic principles are true but need more generalization. |
