Thiamin biosynthesis: still yielding fascinating biological chemistry

by Prof. Prof. Tadhg P. Begley (Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas)

Wednesday, February 23, 2011 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at Colaba Campus ( AG-66 )
Description
Thiamin pyrophosphate plays a key role in the stabilization of the acyl carbanion synthon in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. The biosynthesis of the thiamin pyrimidine and thiazole is complex and is different from any of the characterized chemical or biochemical routes to these heterocycles.
This lecture will describe recent progress on the biosynthesis of the thiamin pyrimidine in bacteria and the thiamin thiazole in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
