ASET Colloquium

Seismic qualification and Retrofitting of Structure and Equipment

by Dr. G.R. Reddy (Head, Structural and Seismic Engineering Section, Reactor Safety Division, BARC)

Friday, December 20, 2013 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at Colaba Campus ( AG-66 )
Description
There are large numbers of structures being collapsed every year under normal loads whose life may be in the range of 10-50 years. There may be stray incidents of newly built structures being collapsed. In view of this it is necessary to assess the health of the structures regularly and rehabilitate and retrofit if necessary. If the retrofitting is performed to make the structures safe for earthquake loads, it can encompass the requirement of normal loads also. In the present talk, brief introduction to the earthquake design of structures including supporting equipment of nuclear facilities will be provided. Focus is given to the procedure and methods of retrofitting of existing structures and equipment. Also briefly discussed the research carried out to develop new methods of retrofitting including numerical analysis and experimental aspects.

About Dr. G.R.Reddy :

Dr. G.R.Reddy has about three decades of experience in the area of Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering. He analyzed, designed nuclear facility structures, equipment and piping systems. He made significant contributions to the design of 500 MWe PHWRs and has involved in the design of AHWR. Dr. Reddy made contributions to the design of 30 M DSN antenna for Chandrayan project and recently completed the design of a large size gamma ray telescope. As a prerequisite to life extension of nuclear facilities, Dr. Reddy and his team have assessed the health of large number of structures using NDT. Dr. Reddy is working as expert member to support the disaster management activities of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. He has guided several M.Tech and Ph.D. students. Dr. Reddy has more than 360 publications to his credit. He is the president of Association of Structural Rehabilitation (ASTR).
