Description
Hair is an appendage of the epidermis of the skin and a characteristic of 
Mammals. It has different functions in different mammals. In human beings its 
importance more seen as for appearances. Regardless of its ethnic origin, it 
exhibits common morphology. Its morphology includes the dead keratin structure 
which is visible above the skin called the hair shaft and  its origin in the 
hair follicle in the deep dermis. In Dermatology practice, patients present 
with hair fall, hair loss, mostly women. At present, practices for visits to 
the beauty parlours for hair dyes, straightening, ironing are in the vogue 
besides hair drying by blow dryers common. Heat has been found to damage the 
hair resulting in high breakability index leading to hair fall. The 
presentation deals with light microscopy, Electron microscopy evidence of heat 
damaging the hair shaft. 

About the Speaker: 
Dr. Ram Malkani, is a Consultant at the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, 
Mumbai. He is a member of several professional bodies of dermatologists and 
has received numerous awards and honours. Although a practicing dermatologist, 
he has an abiding interest in research, like hormonal correlates in female 
patients of acne, clinical and neuro-physiological evaluation of the role 
of prophylactic Corticosteroids, viral genomic drug resistance in seropositive 
HIV individuals – to mention a few.
