Wednesday Colloquia

From Big Bang to BICEPs

by Dr. Subha Majumdar (Department of Theoretical Physics, TIFR)

Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at Colaba Campus ( AG - 66 (Lecture Theatre) )
Description
By detecting and measuring polarization patterns around hot and cold spots in the Cosmic Microwave Background, the BICEP2 experiment at the South Pole recently found signatures of primordial Gravitational Waves coming from our baby Universe right after its birth. The observations probe the Inflationary epoch in the history of our Universe and provide clues to the physics that went on at the earliest of times ever probed by humans. If confirmed, by other missions, the impact of the results is unprecedented in scale.

After a pedagogic introduction to the underlying physics and the experiment, I will discuss the BICEP2 result, its implications and some future possibilities.
