Description
Research in terahertz part of the electromagnetic spectrum became intense due to the invention of terahertz time-domain (THz-TDS) spectroscopy and its potential applications in homeland security, pharmaceutical industry, plastic industry, art conservation, food industry, etc. Metamaterial are artificial materials with periodic metallic inclusions to semiconductors. They showed exotic properties like negative refraction, cloaking, perfect absorption, etc. The advantage of these materials is that the dimensions of the metallic inclusions can tune the resonance phenomena involved in these. This presentation gives an overview of the metamaterials that were designed by finite element method, fabricated by electron beam lithography, and characterized by THz-TDS here in TIFR. It will include results of single layer planar THz filters, narrowband THz polarizers, and tunable Fano-resonance.
