It is found that different kinds of fluid from Ekpyratic matter to Phantom dark energy, as well as, Chaplygin gas,can be simulated by a nonlinear spinor field. The role of spinor field in the evolution of a Universe given by a Bianchi type-I anisotropic cosmological model is thoroughly studied. It is found that a suitable choice of nonlinearity, describing the self-action of the spinor field, can address a set of problems in modern cosmology such as initial singularity, problem of isotropization and late time acceleration.
