ASET Colloquium

Bubbling with nanotubes

Description
“…double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.” This is how William Shakespeare introduced bubbles to his readers. In the contemporary scenario, bubbles are important as they find applications in diverse areas of scientific, technological and social endeavours, ranging from astronomy, marine biology and physics to economics, mechanical engineering and the biomedical sciences. In this talk, I shall refrain from invoking fire to generate bubbles. Instead, I shall show how the use of carbon nanotubes has allowed us to generate bubbles in various liquids using only a couple of mW’s of laser light. The dynamics of how gaseous, vaporous, and mixed bubbles grow and collapse will be discussed.
