Wednesday Colloquia

A New Era in High Energy Density Materials Research

by Prof. Prof. Raymond Jeanloz (University of California, Berkeley)

Thursday, October 21, 2010 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at Colaba Campus ( AG-66 )
Description
“Recent commissioning of new laser facilities, such as the Mega-Joule capability of the US National Ignition Facility, offers unprecedented opportunities for studying condensed matter at conditions exceeding the atomic unit of pressure (~ 0.3 Gbar). The chemical bond is dramatically altered at these compressions, and matter can be put into a new regime that is both highly degenerate and has atoms squeezed to within the Bohr radius. Material properties determined under such conditions are relevant to understanding the formation and evolution of planets, as well as the transition from planets to brown dwarfs and stars”
