Abstract: This talk contains two parts, both about using single-molecule fluorescence imaging to study intrinsically heterogeneous and dynamics systems in chemistry and biology. In the 1st part, I will describe our study of photoelectrocatalytic reactions on single photoanodes in a photoelectrochemical cell, so as to discover optimal surface sites for modifying them with catalysts for water oxidation reactions. In the 2nd part, I will present our discovery of novel mechanisms of transcription regulation in living cells.
