Description
"A scalar concentration field in a turbulent flow undergoes a cascade of stretching and folding processes that result in efficient mixing on times-scales much shorter that those associated with diffusion. A binary liquid mixture, on the other hand, undergoes coarsening and the mixture separates into phases enriched with its two components. This phenomenon is known as spinodal decomposition. We show that the competition between turbulence and the coarsening leads to a dynamically-active statistically steady state. We show that turbulence arrests the coarsening process. The arrest length scale can be estimated with an argument similar to the one proposed by Hinze for the maximal stability diameter of droplets in turbulence. We also discuss how the energy cascade of turbulence is altered."
