Description
In this talk I will use the power of the AdS/CFT correspondence, a UV-complete theory of quantum gravity, to study a set of old conjectures about how symmetries are constrained by quantum gravity. Along the way I will clarify what is meant by gauge and global symmetries in quantum field theory, and also give a simple criterion on conformal field theories which implies that any internal symmetry must be compact.
