Description
Mathematics is of course considered a science. However it stands a little apart from other sciences in many ways even while it is an all important tool for the natural sciences. This standing apart from other sciences is indeed reflected in the sociology of the scientific community. The mathematician wields little clout in the power structure within the community: this is true the world over, but particularly so in our country. This talk will explore the characteristics of mathematics that sets it apart from the natural sciences at the philosophical level as well as the place of the mathematician in the scientific community.
