Mathematics: the Queen who does not hold court

Mathematics is of course considered a science. However it stands a little apart from other sciences in many ways even while it is an all important tool for the natural sciences.This standing apart from other sciences is indeed reflected in the sociology of the scientific community. The mathematician wields little clout in the power structure within the community: this is true the world over, but  particularly so in our country. This talk will explore the characteristics of mathematics that sets it apart from the natural sciences at the philosophical  level as well as the place of the mathematician in the scientific community.

About the Speaker:
Prof. M.S.Raghunathan is currently a Distinguished Professor at CEBS, Mumbai. He was formerly Head of the National Centre for Mathematics, IIT Bombay as well as  Professor of eminence and Homi Bhabha Chair Professor at TIFR, Mumbai. Prof. Raghunathan is a Fellow of the Royal Society, The World Academy of Sciences and American Mathematical Society. He is recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards from the Government of India. He is also recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Srinivasa Ramanujan Medal and S. N. Bose Professorship. He played major role in promotion of mathematics through National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and other scientific bodies.
