Energy capture, storage, and conversion in living systems rely on the flow of electrons and protons. Electron transfer reactions also participate essential for biosynthesis, damage repair, and signaling. Electrons flow in biology on time scales from picoseconds to seconds, employing electron tunneling pathways between the charge localizing groups. I will describe the theoretical framework needed to describe the flow of electrons through proteins and nucleic acids, and will discuss our recent developments surrounding coherent charge transfer in DNA, micrometer length-scale transit of electrons through extracellular appendages, and electron bifurcation.
