Light by light (LbyL) scattering is a very rare phenomena which proceeds, at leading order in the fine structure constant, via virtual box diagrams involving electrically charged fermions (leptons and quarks) or W bosons. The evidence for light by light scattering is provided by exploiting the strong electromagnetic fields from ultraperipheral PbPb collisions. This process has been proposed as a sensitive channel to study physics beyond the standard model as the modifications of the LbyL scattering rates can occur if new heavy particles such as magnetic monopoles, vector-like fermions or axion-like particles contribute. These searches require the accurate estimation of the heavy ion (PbPb) data luminosity. This talk covers the results of evidence for light by light scattering and emittance scan analysis of PbPb collisions for luminosity measurement.
