Description |
Most of the baryons in galaxies are not in stars or the interstellar medium. They are spread out in a diffuse multiphase circumgalactic medium (CGM; covering a range of temperatures and densities) spread over ~100 kpc (instead, the stellar disk only extends ~10 kpc). I shall describe recent observations that probe this large baryon reservoir of galaxies. A large range of temperatures in the CGM is surprising. I shall present some theoretical models to understand the multiphase gas in the CGM.
