Description
Emotional intelligence (EI), sometimes referred to as EQ ("emotional quotient"), refers to a person's ability to recognize, understand, manage, and reason with emotions. It is a critical ability when it comes to interpersonal communication—and a hot topic not only in psychology but in the business world. The term was coined by psychologists in the 1990s.

Interest in emotion psychology and the concept of emotional intelligence really caught fire with the 1995 publication of Daniel Goleman's book "Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ." In the book, Goleman argued that emotional intelligence was critical for predicting success in life. Emotional competencies, he argued, also played a particularly important role in the workplace. Researchers have suggested that emotional intelligence influences how well employees interact with their colleagues, and EQ is also thought to play a role in how workers manage stress and conflict. It also affects overall performance on the job. Other studies have linked emotional intelligence with job satisfaction. Studies have shown that employees with higher scores on measures of EQ also tend to be rated higher on measures of interpersonal functioning, leadership abilities, and stress management.

In the talk, the concept of EI will be introduced followed by deliberation on how each one of us can improve this skill with training and practice, because if you are happy at your work then there is a marked increase in your productivity, professionalism, and overall health. It’s a win-win situation for both, the organization as well as the individual. So sharpen your emotional intelligence skills and become the happiest, best version of yourself!

(Ms Joshi attended a workshop “Emotional Intelligence at the Workplace for Scientists/Technologies” organized by Centre for Organization Development, Hyderabad (Feb. 17-21, 2020), sponsored by Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, and in this talk, she will be sharing those concepts of EI which are useful and can be implemented at one’s workplace).

About the Speaker:

Ms Mamata Joshi has been working in the National Facility for High Field NMR, TIFR, Mumbai for the last 33 years. She joined TIFR after a B.Sc (Chemistry) in 1987 and later completed her M.Sc. (By research) degree under the guidance of Prof. Girjesh Govil from TIFR. She has been primarily responsible for the smooth functioning of the facility which (till now) housed four high-field state-of-the-art NMR spectrometers. She trains TIFR graduate students in NMR operations and interacts with other NMR users for the proper planning and execution of their experiments. She advises and assists external researchers on how to make optimum use of the NMR spectrometers available to get structure information for their molecular systems. She has given talks on NMR techniques & their applications in several academic Institutes and in NMR workshops & also lives tutorials to workshop participants on NMR experiment setup.

She has co-authored about 30 NMR-based publications. Her key research areas are NMR-based metabolomics for the identification of biomarkers in plants and biological systems, Multidimensional NMR structure and function studies of bioactive peptides and nucleic acids, Study of molecular-level interaction of potential drug molecules with model lipid membranes using multidimensional NMR and Cell Permeable Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensors for Detecting Signal Mediating Phospholipids.
