In this non-technical talk, the history and evolution of modern science in India will be broadly surveyed. After a brief introduction, the introduction of scientific processes by the British will be mentioned, and followed by a mention of the spread of western education. The contributions of several pioneering Indian scientists in the colonial period will then be reviewed. Finally, the growth of major scientific and technological institutions in post-independence India will be outlined. No scientific training is needed to follow this talk.
