I will present a paradigm of star cluster formation in hub-filament systems where massive stars form in density amplified hubs and low mass stars form in filaments. It can explain the global properties of star clusters in a coherent manner. The density amplification in hubs and the spectrum of filament linear densities are found to be a consequence of coalescence of molecular filaments, as evidenced by observations of Mon R2. These observations also reveal the structure of hubs and its influence on the formation of massive stars. I will discuss how this new view impacts our understanding of high-mass star formation and deliberate on a few open questions.
