TIFR is a premiere research institute in India with about 200 faculty in the areas of Basic Sciences, Mathematics & Technology and Computer Science. How to get to TIFR: The location of TIFR, the Mumbai International & Domestic Airports and Railway Stations are indicated in the map below: From the international and domestic airports (32 KM, 45-90 mins by taxi): Pre-paid taxis are the recommended way of reaching TIFR from Mumbai's airports. There are counters for pre-paid taxis before you exit the arrival hall. Specify your destination as "Dr. Homi Bhabha Road, Navy Nagar, Colaba". Badhwar Park is a prominent landmark to remember while driving towards TIFR from the airport. The route from this landmark is indicated in the map below: Mumbai Local taxis are yellow and black in color which are less expensive in comparison to the radio cabs and can be hailed in any street or found at any local taxi stands. The approximate fare to the venue from the airport would be around Rs. 800/- (one way) in a local taxi which includes the cost of the toll gate for using the Bandra - Worli Sea link i.e, Rs. 60/- (one way). Airport Taxis are available at the Pre Paid taxi counters. Also, booking counters of AC video cabs managed by various operators, are available at the airport for hiring. You will be given a receipt for your payment. Retain this till the end of your ride; then hand it over to the taxi driver. At the exit from the airport, the police may want to look at this slip. There are radio cabs also available in the airport premises. You will have to book the cab before exiting the airport building. The cost will be about Rs. 700-800/- from International airport and less than that from the domestic airport. This service is by tariff meter. There is a free phone counter inside the arrival hall to book these cabs Once you reach Navy Nagar, it is easy to find TIFR. It lies at the far end of Homi Bhabha Road (one of Navy Nagar's principal roads), beyond the Navy Nagar bus terminus, on the left side. Most passersby on the street will know where it is, but remember that it is commonly referred to as 'TIFR' rather than 'Tata Institute'. From Railway Stations: Mumbai City has two long distance railway stations Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Mumbai Central. From Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) - 20-30 mins by taxi Taxis are available from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Alternatively, buses (routes 3, 6 Ltd, 136) come to Navy Nagar from outside the local station at CST. TIFR is on the same road as the Navy Nagar bus terminus, which is where you should get off. From Mumbai Central - 30-45 mins by taxi Taxis are available from the ranks outside the station. Alternatively, you could cross over to the local station and board a Churchgate bound local. You have to buy a separate ticket for the local train. From Churchgate - 15-30 mins by taxi Taxis are available from outside Churchgate. Alternately, a bus (route 137) comes from Churchgate to the Navy Nagar terminus, down the road from TIFR. An alternative mode to reaching from CST and Churchgate Railway stations is to take free TIFR bus service. The bus follows a circular route first reaching CST and then Churchgate station.
