About the course

This course is an introdution to modern Quantum Chromo-Dynamics and its main techniques and results. At the end of this course you will be expected to read papers, do simple computations in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and use the theory to make simple quantitative predictions for processes occuring in hadron or heavy-ion colliders.

Pre-requisites for this course are two-fold. First, I will assume knowledge of the standard model of particle physics and the quark model of hadrons as covered in the usual topical course in particle physics. Second, I will assume basic familiarity with quantum field theory to the extent that is covered in the first topical course. The ability to use at least one of the programming languages: f77, f90, c or c++, Mathematica, the SPIRES database and TeX will be taken for granted.

Topics to be covered

Basics of particle phenomenology
The particle data book contains most of the known and basic phenomena involving hadrons. In the first lecture of this course I will work through the particle data book quickly and point out the basic phenomenology that is known and forms the core of problems which is being more deeply explored in theory and collider experiments now.
Basics of non-Abelian gauge theories
Introduction to perturbation theory
Introduction to lattice gauge theory
Lattice QCD
Perturbative QCD
Applications to collider phenomena
