Description
Following the suggestion by Liu and Nagel in 1998 that jamming in granular materials is controlled by a critical point, there has been a lot of effort devoted to probing the nature of this non-equilibrium transition. In this talk, I will discuss recent results on (a) evidence for a diverging length scale in frictionless packings as they are decompressed, and (b) the nature of sheared jammed states in frictional systems that exist at packing fractions well below the critical density for creating isotropic jammed states. These results present a more complex and richer picture of jamming than that presented in the original Liu-Nagel jamming phase diagram.
