Description
There is an ever increasing demand for instant and reliable information on modern communication networks. Physical layer re-transmissions can be thought of as opportunistic coding schemes. However, this results in non-deterministic delay added to packet transmissions. In this talk, I first present the impact of physical layer decisions on transmit buffer occupancy. Next, I present the impact of physical layer re-transmissions on end-user experience.

Bio: Parimal Parag received B. Tech. and M. Tech. degrees from IIT Madras in 2004; and the PhD degree from Texas A&M University in 2011. He was at Stanford University and Los Alamos National Laboratory, in autumn of 2010 and summer of 2007, respectively. He is currently a senior systems engineer at ASSIA Inc., working on performance evaluation, monitoring, and control of large broadband communication networks. His research interests include application of stochastic and optimization methods to communication networks. His other research interests lie in the areas of statistical signal processing, queueing theory, information theory, combinatorics, and probability theory.
