Theoretical Physics Colloquium

From Cold Atoms to Complex Materials: Opportunities and Challenges

Description
Ultracold atomic systems have emerged in recent years as a prototype for studying strongly correlated quantum many body systems. The use of optical lattices to implement the fermionic Hubbard model has raised expectations that we will be able to use these systems as quantum simulators for different lattice models relevant to understanding complex materials in condensed matter physics, like high temperature superconductors. In this talk I will sketch the achievements and
challenges in this field. I will also show how use of new probes and
an understanding of non-equilibrium processes in these systems are attempting to surmount some of the challenges.
