Description
ABSTRACT:

Hierarchical association of matter is a predestined phenomenon. Molecules are formed by combination of atoms through sharing of electrons. Such molecules assemble further through interactions other than the covalent bonds. These weak interactions connecting molecules are generally called non-covalent interactions. These interactions, though weak, play important roles in imparting properties and functions to materials. Aspatio-temporally regulated interplay of various non-covalent interactions is the basis of life. A well-defined assembly formed through non-covalent association of two or more molecules is called a supermolecule or supramolecular assembly. Chemist’s approach to mimic various natural systems/processes has provided novel supermolecules with various functions. In this talk, a few examples of supramolecular approach for the synthesis of functional materials will be discussed. 1One of the research themes in our group is supramolecular chemistry. We have exploited non-covalent interactions, mainly hydrogen bonds, as supramolecular glues to design various supermolecules and to tap functions from such assemblies. 2-9 In this context our work on soft optics, marine oil spill recovery, synthesis of stereoregular polymers of various biomolecules such as carbohydrates, nucleosides etc. will be discussed.
