Description
Neutrino oscillation has typically been though of as a simple quantum mechanics problem: the relative phase evolves with time along the particle’s classical trajectory. We show that for a dense gas of neutrinos this picture is not appropriate. The kinematic degrees of freedom and the flavor degrees of freedom can evolve differently. We make this notion more precise by deriving the general dispersion relation for the linearized flavor modes, classifying the possible kinds of instabilities, and explaining the ways in which various modes can be excited.
