Description
Atom interferometry is a fascinating technique in which beams of atoms are made to interfere instead of light beams as in the case of conventional interferometers. The wavelength associated with the atoms can be orders of magnitude smaller compare to light. As the precision of the interferometer depends on the wavelength, the atom interferometers are more sensitive compared to the light interferometers of the same dimensions. Hence they can be very good inertial sensors.
In our lab we are setting up an atom interferometer for rotation measurements. In this talk I will be talking about various components of atom interferometry and how it can be used for inertial sensing. I will also present the progress of the experiment so far. Finally, I will also discuss how the atom interferometers can be used beyond inertial sensing, for fundamental physics experiments.
