Description
The anomalous event-by-event fluctuations of the relative yields of neutral (K0s) and charged kaons (Ks) have been predicted to yield a signature for the formation of strange Disoriented Chiral Condensate (DCC) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions The first measurement of event-by-event strangeness fluctuations in the kaon sector in Pb-Pb collisions at &sqrt;(sNN) = 2.76 TeV is carried out using the the ALICE detector at the LHC. The robust fluctuation correlator nudyn is used to evaluate the magnitude of fluctuations of the relative yields of neutral and charged kaons, as well as the relative yields of charged kaons, as a function of collision centrality. While the correlator nudyn(K+;K-) exhibits approximate 1/Nch scaling with collision centrality, neutral vs. charged kaons fluctuations measured with nudyn exhibit a significant deviation from such scaling and cannot be reproduced by simulations based on the HIJING and AMPT models. A simple phenomenological model of K0s vs. kaon event-by-event yield fluctuations, is introduced to study the feasibility and sensitivity of detection of the production of strange DCCs in heavy-ion collisions. The studies demonstrate that the magnitude of nudyn(K ;K0) is very sensitive to the presence of small admixture of DCCs in normal non-DCC events.
