Self-propelled particle models of collective motion (e.g. Vicsek et al 1995 PRL) have inspired innumerable studies in both physics and biology of collective motion. Over the last decade, modern methods of image analysis and tracking have been used extensively to study whether real organisms do indeed follow the simple rules assumed in the statistical physics models of collective motion. However, this large body of theoretical and empirical studies have overlooked the intrinsic noise that arises in any finite collective. In this talk, I will present our recent work involving analytical theory, computation as well as experiments: we show that intrinsic-noise can promote order in animal collectives. |
