Description
Fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) occurs in clean 2D electronic systems, at high magnetic fields, and low temperatures. The relative obscurity of this context belies the broad impact of FQHE on modern condensed matter physics. FQH phases arise from the formation of highly correlated gapped quantum electronic liquids. Variational wavefunctions built on a theory of emergent particles called composite fermions have been central to our understanding of FQH physics. I will introduce the composite fermion variational wavefunctions, and discuss the many signatures of FQH phases accessible in numerics - such as the entanglement spectra, root partitions, shift, and degeneracies on manifolds. Patterns of electronic correlations in the variational wavefunctions suggest a local, strongly interacting model, that I present in conclusion, with an exactly solvable spectrum qualitatively same as that of the FQH phases in the lowest Landau level.
