Jets are complex, multi-scale objects that serve as a perfect example of the rich emerging phenomena stemming from the very basic building blocks of QCD. Parton showers are also witnesses of the creation of deconfined QCD matter in heavy ion collisions, and a lot of effort has been devoted to the understanding of their modifications due to their interaction with the medium, both theoretically and in experiments. Important progress has been done in the last years: we have come a long way since the groundbreaking, yet considerably simpler, studies of single hadron suppression at RHIC. In this talk I will present the current picture of our understanding of jet energy loss and jet substructure modification, which requires the consideration of a number of physical phenomena beyond single parton energy loss, such as color coherence and the multi-prong nature of jets, back- reaction of the flowing medium, or even selection bias effects.
