High Energy Sky: Progress in Gamma Ray Astronomy

Description
This is a brief review of the  present status of gamma ray astronomy in which new telescopes have started functioning during the last five years. In the lower energy domain, there are the new satellites like the INTEGRAL and FERMI/ GLAST. The new higher energy experiments which use the atmospheric Cerenkov technique are HESS, VERITAS and MAGIC. The discoveries by these several experiments are expected to throw new light on behaviour of sources at high energies. While there are many results on variety of sources from these experimetns, only SNRs, Pulsars and AGNs will be discussed . The list of pulsars
is growing with many of them emitting only in gamma rays and also indicating that emission could be from the Outer Gap. As for outside the galaxy , many far
off sources have been discovered mainly because of the ability of Cerenkov telescopes to go to lower energies. A brief report will also be given of HAGAR, the new gamma ray telescope in operation at Hanle in Ladakh.
