Description
In this talk, I will focus on methods for understanding and predicting
properties of real materials using atomistic first principles quantum
mechanical calculations. I will discuss the key ideas and
approximations that allow us to calculate properties of materials. The
methods I will present are based on density functional theory and many
body perturbation theory. They have been employed in a variety of
applications. They allow one to predict and interpret experiments by
calculating properties that are experimentally observable. In
particular, I will discuss the applications of these methods to
understanding the physics of defects in solids.
