Big learning from simple experiments

Most of the time our physics learning, especially at school level, is  centered around stating  established facts, laws and equations. In the name of experiments, we ask the students to verify these laws and in the name of practicing we give some unrealistic numerical problems to solve. This pattern does not connect many of the students with the inherent beauty of Physics and very few take up Physics as a route to add to the knowledge base of humanity. Very simple and short experiments with familiar objects can turn the table around. It creates curiosity, innovative thinking and invite analyzing. Through some such demonstration experiments, these ideas will be put forward.

About the Speaker:

Prof. H.C.Verma did his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur and joined as its faculty in 1994. He also taught at the Patna Science College for 15 years. He has worked in a number of areas, both theoretical and experimental, but the central theme of his research work had been study of condensed matter using experimental techniques of nuclear physics. He published about 140 research Papers in reputed journals. He has authored several books on physics at the graduate, undergraduate and school levels, widely known and most recommended being the two-volume book titled “Concepts of Physics” as well as “Quantum Physics”.
