Description |
Although Quantum Mechanics is about a century old we are only slowly beginning to grasp how truly strange it is. It is now clear that there is an essential weirdness in Quantum Systems which makes them very different from classical ones. This weirdness is called Entanglement and it responsible for many things such as the violations of Bell's inequalities. Entanglement is also a key reason to hope that we can build quantum computers which are much more powerful than their classical counterparts. In the colloquium I will discuss the concept of Entanglement and describe how it can be precisely quantified in various settings including Gauge Theories which arise in particle physics and condensed matter physics. More broadly, I will discuss some of the promise that our growing understanding of Quantum Mechanics holds for the future in various branches of science. |
