Variability in Circumstellar Disks and Star Formation: a Powerful Tool

Description
Is our Solar System typical of planetary systems around other stars? What are the key stages in the formation of a young star’s disk, and are there chaotic elements that can alter the formation history? Answering these questions will eventually lead us to a generalized theory of star and planet formation, helping us understand what we can expect as we explore the galaxy with our newest facilities like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Infrared is key to understanding the kinematic, chemical, and variability signatures of disks and envelopes. Through programs with the Spitzer, Herschel, SOFIA, and Chandra facilities, I will explore some of these questions, and focus on a particularly interesting recent discovery with the Hubble Telescope that could  provide novel insight into the innermost portions of circumstellar disks. I will also provide a brief overview of JWST, which is launching quite soon!
