Description |
This talk will outline our approach to addressing the generic challenge of AI for Science from the point of large-scale experimental facilities at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK. In particular, the talk will focus on how we have been specific about this rather broad challenge, along with a number of real-world examples covering different areas of the challenge, such as astronomy, material sciences, and core machine learning. About the Speaker: Dr Jeyan Thiyagalingam heads the Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) Research Group and the AI for Science initiatives at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in the UK. The SciML group is one of the premier research groups working on AI for Science in the UK, and is central to all STFC's experimental facilities, such as Diamond Light Source, STFC Central Laser Facilities, STFC UK Astronomy Technology Centre, and STFC ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, and focuses on the development and application of machine learning and signal processing techniques for addressing fundamental scientific problems. Prior to joining STFC, he was an academic/lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering and Electronics and Computer Sciences at the University of Liverpool, and prior to that at the University of Oxford as a James Martin Fellow. He also worked in the industry, including MathWorks UK. His research interests and expertise are in representation learning, complex machine learning models, and signal processing. He is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a Turing Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's hub for AI research. |
