Movement: In Health for Health! Application of Human Movement Science: In Healthcare for Health & Wellness

Description
The human movement begins in the uterus as early as 16-25weeks of intra-uterine life. Movement is expressed in various forms of activities of daily living, sport, dance and leisure activities across life-span. All these movement forms are impaired either due to ageing, injury, disorder or disease. Impaired movement restricts physical activity and participation in personal, work and social life. Change in lifestyle has also brought about a change in the movement profile of daily life and ultimately physical activity.

Therefore, MGM Centre of Human Movement Science adopted an inter-disciplinary (health-engineering) approach to explore a wide spectrum of movement forms in order to develop scientific applications of movement as a therapeutic tool to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases, inform technology design for much-needed culture/context-specific restoration of daily-function and enhance sport and dance performance.

This talk will unravel the application of human movement science in Healthcare - including Technology Design; Sport and Dance.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Rajani Mullerpatan is a Human Movement Scientist and Physiotherapist, exploring movement forms of daily living, Yoga, sports and dance for evidence-based integration of these movement forms in developing culturally palatable, health-promotion strategies for attenuation of the burden of non-communicable diseases and collateral promotion of Indian heritage of movement forms among the younger generation. Parallel, inter-disciplinary research with engineers continues for the design and validation of pertinent technology, which can be used for the masses in rural and urban sectors to address unmet needs in healthcare. She has collaborated with national and international Institutes of eminence to deliver training in human movement science to develop the interdisciplinary task force in India.

Dr. Mullerpatan is a Member of the Development Group for Low Back Pain-part of the WHO Rehabilitation Programme on the development of the Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation. She is trained and worked in India and UK and has been an Executive Council Member of the International Society of Biomechanics.
