Is the concept of truth strictly only applicable to the propositions of science?

The predicate ‘is true’ when applied to a sentence or proposition is often said to be claiming of the proposition that it describes/represents/corresponds to facts or objects and properties in the world.  Akeel Bilgrami’s lecture will explore the question whether such a predicate, therefore, must be restricted to the propositions of science?  He will look at the grounds for thinking so and assess them, considering, as he does so, whether there are any considerations that prevent us from applying the predicate to the propositions of morals or aesthetics as well. 

About the Speaker:
Akeel Bilgrami holds the Sidney Morgenbesser Chair of Philosophy at Columbia University.   He got a first degree in English Literature from Elphinstone College in Bombay and then went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar for a second Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.  He has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Chicago.  He is the author of the books, Belief and Meaning (1992), Self-Knowledge and Resentment (2006), Secularism, Identity, and Enchantment (2014) and Capital, Culture, and the Commons (2022).  He is the author of two forthcoming books Gandhi, The Philosopher (Columbia University Press) and What is a Muslim? (Princeton University Press). His long term ongoing project is on the subject of the relations between value, agency, and practical reason.
