Description
In the last years a renewed interest emerged on the occurrence of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition in quasi two-dimensional (2D) systems, like cuprate superconductors, superconducting interfaces in artificial heterostructures and disordered films of conventional superconductors. However, the emerging physics is rather unconventional when compared to the standard expectations of KT theory: a typical example is provided by the lack of a sharp jump of the superfluid density even in ultrathin films. Here I will focus on the role of the vortex-core energy and sample inhomogeneity as key ingredients to address the role of vortex fluctuations in low-dimensional superconductors.
