Description
Abstract: We show that silica aerogel acts as an impurity, effectively introducing an additional scattering mechanism for quasiparticles. This leads to a modification of the transport lifetime in the normal state. A consequence of the impurity scattering is that the mean free path is restricted, and in a manner similar to the effect of magneticimpurities in a s-wave superconductor, that leads to a reduction of the superfluid Tc. The uniaxial compression also is thought to promote the occurrence of the anisotropic A phase. We do find that thestability of the A phase is promoted. These are ongoing experiments at Cornell so the results should be regarded as preliminary but provocative
