The Cosmology and Astrophysics of Dark Matter

Description
Dark Matter (DM) cannot be seen. Yet, it is ubiquitous. It has to be invoked to explain astrophysical observations across galactic to cosmological scales. Theories abound as to what it might be and the search (or detection) for a DM candidate lies in the forefront of astro-particle research.

In this talk, I will touch on the cosmological and astrophysical aspects of DM : Why we need it? How much DM is there and how precisely can we estimate its mean density? What are the velocities with which DM particles move, especially, in our Galaxy and in the Solar neighbourhood? These are crucial inputs for interpreting particle physics DM detection experiment results.
