Description |
Phonosurgery, is surgery, which is performed to restore, preserve or change one’s voice. It may be Laser surgery being performed endoscopically for the treatment of cancer of the vocal folds, framework surgery to alter the tension, length or position of the vocal folds so as to alter the pitch, breathiness or strain of voice or fine microsurgery to restore voice of a professional voice user such as a singer. With advances in technology and instrumentation, the multi-layered microanatomy of the vocal folds can be better appreciated helping to plan surgery at a microscopic level based on the principles of physiology of phonation. The first part of the talk shall focus on how phonomicrosurgery is based on the microscopic anatomy of the vocal folds and on the physiology of phonation. The second part of the talk shall discuss the ability of laryngeal framework surgeries to change the pitch, breathiness or strain of one’s voice. Further research at a cellular level may be able to answer some unresolved voice pathologies. |
