Wednesday Colloquia

Understanding Himalayan Glaciers

by Prof. R. Shankar (IMSc., Chennai)

Wednesday, November 23, 2016 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at HOMI BHABHA AUDITORIUM
TIFR, Colaba, Mumbai
Description
"Why study Himalayan glaciers? "Because they are there" is the basic answer, as it is for any other natural phenomenon. However, currently there is also concern about the effects of the rapidly warming climate on the glaciers and consequently on the river flow patterns.

We will first discuss some basic physics of glaciers and their role in the water cycle. We will then step back into the past, describe the glacial cycles (ice ages) and the climate-cryosphere interaction at long time scales. We then focus on the Himalaya and summarise what is known about the changes in the cryosphere in the recent past. Finally, we will describe our ongoing studies of Satopanth glacier, Garhwal Himalaya."
