Description
Mumbai, the financial and commercial capital of India, has witnessed enormous increase in population and employment opportunities in the last few decades. Presently, the commuters in Mumbai Metropolitan Region use mainly suburban railway system and BEST for their daily travel. The suburban railway system, which runs in the north-south direction, is heavily overcrowded. Efforts are being made through Mumbai Urban Transport Project to enhance the efficiency and capacity of suburban rail system.

The first East-West 11.4km long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro rail corridor, which was implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Government of Maharashtra in June 2014 has already impacted the lives of Mumbaikars in many ways. Simultaneously, MMRDA has taken up India’s first Monorail project to connect the unconnected. While the Phase I of this project (Chembur-Wadala) was commissioned in Feb 2014, the Phase II (Wadala-Jacob-Circle) is expected to be commissioned shortly. MMRDA is also implementing various other urban infrastructure projects including other Metro-lines, Mumbai-Trans-Harbour-Link (MTHL), Multi-modal Corridors, and Coastal Roads to enhance the connectivity and quality of travel to Mumbaikars.
